Summer Rose Care Gary Hileog from Michigan State University Extension discusses mid season rose care. He discusses how to prune spent flowers, including exactly how far down on the stem to cut. He also shows how to prune out blind shoots, which is a shoot with no flower. He says that black spot on your roses will cause the rose to loose leaves, which will prevent it from storing enough energy to survive the winter. He suggests one pound of nitrogen fertilizer per month until August, and no fertilizer after August first. Rose Care Master Gardener Alice Michelson talks with Ed Thralls from the Orange County Cooperative Extension about rose care. Alice says that she enjoys roses because you can easily share them with friends by bringing them a bouquet, and roses grow all year long. Roses need six hours minimum sun, they need lots of water, monthly fertilizer, and fungicide. Alice says that she only buys fortuniana rose stock, which grows well in Central Florida. She amends the soil greatly when planting with a good planting mix with mushroom or cow manure. Alice says that blackspot, aphids, thrip, and beetles are her biggest problems. Finally, Alice recommends the Central Florida Rose Society. Jerry Baker's Year Round Rose Care Spring Planting Secrets Jerry Baker discusses rose planting and care. He says to amend the planting hole with bone meal, Epsom salts, sugar, top soil, and peat moss. If your soil is heavy also add pelletized gypsum. Be sure to remove the plant from it pot as gently as possible. After planting water your rose in to pack the soil down. Make a mound and a water retention trough. Finally, give your roses a tonic of weak tea water, hydrogen peroxide, liquid dish soap, vitamin b1, and whiskey. Bayer Advanced's Tips on Rose Planting and Rose Care Products Lance Walheim from Bayer Advanced gives a few basic tips on growing roses. He says that one very important step is to select roses that do well in your area. Not all roses do well in all areas. Always plant your roses in full sun, with six to eight hours each day. You want to be sure to do a deep watering at least weekly. You want to be sure you are pruning properly, including removing spent flowers. Finally, take care of any disease or insect problems. He suggests using Bayer Advanced All in One Rose and Flower care, which protects against rust, black spot, powdery mildew, Japanese beetles, whitefly, thrip, and fewrtilizes without spraying.
