Gardening Tips - Tomato Plants Garden expert Steve Brookes shares a number of his top tomato tips. He mostly talks about the nutritional needs of tomato plants, and how they need trace elements. He says that you can use a commercial tomato fertilizer, but vacuum cleaner fluff is perfect for tomatoes, and shows how to work that into the soil. He also demonstrates how to use pots without bottoms to improve tomato growth in grow bags. Growing Tomatoes: Try These Gardening Tips From Clean Air Gardedning comes this video with a few excellent tips. He suggests that buying started plants is easier than growing from seed, and stresses that you need to wait until danger of frost is past before planting. Be sure to plant where your tomatoes will get at least six to eight hours of full sun every day. Tomatoes are heavy feeders, so be sure to give your plants lots of organic fertilizer. Tomatoes need good soil. If you have poor soil consider a container or raised beds. Tips and Tricks for Growing Tomatoes From Melissa Allman from Back to the Garden shares a number of tomato growing tips. She points out that determinate tomatoes don't get as big, and might be better than indeterminite varieties for smaller gardens. She then shows the wide variety of tomato fruits from small cherry tomatoes like sweet 100s to the big tomatoes like big boys to the extra large like giant Belgium. She then covers early, mid, and late season tomatoes. Be sure to prepare your soil for tomatoes, ideally in the fall. She recommends that even though tomatoes like acidic soil you should add some lime, ideally amidic lime which contains magnesium, to prevent calcium deficency. She says to plant your new plants deeply, putting as much as seventy percent of the plant under ground. She thens covers what type and amount of fertilizer you should use on your plants. Easy tip for better tomato plants and more tomatoes. Here is a video which first talks about the pros of letting your tomato plants spread as a vine across the garden. This wouldn't work in a smaller garden, but would certainly work in a larger garden. He then gives a very thorough demonstration of pruning a tomato to encourage the plant to get bushy and not tall. He discusses the cons of pruning all suckers, but does remove them when they are high up in the plant.
